- 1. In the Philippines, the homosexual community is not considered a norm to most people. Because this country's citizens mostly live by traditional religious views, they often perceived homosexuals as a product of sin. As a result, they are mistreated and not to be associated with amongst their relatives or friends. In summary, the song "Sirena" embodies the mistreatment of some Filipinos against the homosexual community.
2.
3. First, we must understand what it is like to see life in their eyes. Imagine being abused or mistreated amongst people; looked upon with disgust or disappointment. To fully understand what a homosexual person goes through is to see how they have been treated. Second, we must learn to accept the fact they are still people. Homosexuals are still humane as everyone else, so to look at them differently is what we should not do. Finally, we must acknowledge that they are still the children of God. God knows no mistakes, so if a person is gay, it is the way He made him. Our lives have been mapped out before us by Him. So, if he has made our sexuality a certain way, then so be it.
4. In the hands of God, He has given us many blessings that we, as human beings, are entitled to. He has given the gift of free will, our own personalities, and above all love. Therefore, the Love Wins case winning in the US Supreme Court is not an act of blasphemy, but of equality. Human sexuality is the will to express love amongst those who we feel deeply for, so one's preference should not matter. This case has not only given opportunities to many couples, but has given a message to the American public that as human beings, we are all allowed to love who we love.
- 5. In the article, it has been noted that Islams have punished homosexuals by horrible acts. They have been killed, put to asylums, and punished for their "crime" of homosexuality. Just because some people practice the heterosexual way of life, it does not mean that they are above anyone who does not. It is not a man or woman's fault if they prefer their own genders instead of the other.
6. It is a sin to treat others as if they are beneath you. It is also a sin to classify a human being as a disease just because they choose to love someone who has the same sex. Yes, it is true that the Philippines has and always will be a religious country. However, with the visit of Pope Francis on January 2015, he has stated, "If someone is gay and searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?" If a man from the religious community can accept homosexuality, then why can't we?
7. In both continents, there are positive and negative views that focus on homosexuality. However, there are some ways that differ between the two on how they deal with the topic. In Western countries, homosexuality has been accepted by many people, as proven with the acceptance of same sex marriage in the US Supreme Court. In contrast to this, it has been known that some US states have still been against the entire concept. An example of this would be in Alabama, where they have expressively shown their anger towards the community and have forbid teachers to discuss the topic amongst children. In Asian countries, there are many countries that are known to be gay friendly, such as the Philippines, South Korea, China, and Malaysia. Although this is a positive result, there are some obstacles that go against homosexuality. For example, in the Philippines, the Civil Code of the Philippines has stated that homosexuality is a "disease or sickness."
- Kio Gutierrez Cn:19
1. From what is shown throughout most of the video, the homosexual man is harshly beaten by his father, and also mocked for how they act and look.
Which isnt all that a farcry from how homosexual people are treated by a good chunk of the people in our country, considering how deeply rooted old religious values and words are in our culture.
2. "Upang matakpan ang mga pasa sa mukha.
Na galing sa aking ama."
"Na tila di natutwa sa tuwing ako'y nasisilayan.
Laging nalalatayan."
"Pero bakit parang lahat ay nalilito pa rin?
Ano bang mga problema mo?"
"Akong paluin ng tubo kahit kinakawalang."
"Iniisip ko na lamang na bata ako'y ampon
Kasi araw-araw na lamang ay walang humpay na banat."
3. For starters, don't go treating them like some alien species (or a freak of nature) just because they are attracted to guys if they're a guy or girls if they're a girl.
If you find that hard to do, think about all the scorn, abuse and discrimination they (very likely) have to go through from time to time, would you like to be hated just because of something small as the gender of the person you love? If not, then that's a good start on trying to learn how to empathize with them.
And finally, if anyone is going to raise religious arguements against homosexuals, then they'll need to take that up with God. Because God made us what we are in his blueprints for humanity, sexual orientations included.
And as a majority of us know, God hasn't made in mistakes, so if that man or woman is homosexual, then it's because God made it so they would be.
So just accept them as fellow people and Children of God.
4. The whole Love Wins thing is great in my opinion, because finally everyone is pretty much free to have their love for one another acknowledged by the government/considered official in the eyes of the state.
This case/great event should be treated with disgust or seen as some sort of blasphemy against God or anything of sort really, it's a wonderous event wherein now everyone is free to express their love for one another.
- 5. My honest opinion of the article without rambling on about it, would be that the whole article highlights how awfully many of the people in this world treat
others simply because heterosexuality stands as the status quo of the world, and any sort homosexuality must be stamped out and crushed lest some awful sodom and gomorrah number two would befall our world.
The problem with that, is that people cant differentiate what is sodomy and what is simply expressing love for another anymore.
6. I'd say that the Civil Code of country needs to be amended again if that's what it sees homosexuals and their sexuality as.
It is just disgusting to see that a person's sexual orientation is classified as something as rude/disrespectful as a "disease"/"sickness" simply because it's something differnet from the overwhelming amounts of heterosexuality all around.
I understand that our country is a deeply religious one so these beliefs of being anti-homosexual are definitely drilled down into the core of our minds, but it's literally a whole new decade/century/millenium! The current Pope has adapted to the whole new world, what with him accepting homosexuals and all, so why can't we do the same as well?
7. Both sides if the world's hemispheres have their good and bad sides regarding homosexuality.
The Western side has a good chunk of it accepting homosexuality really well, with the particular exception of a couple of American states (Mississippi, Alabama, Texas, etc) and several organizations as well. (The Boy Scouts Of America, Concerned Women For America, Neo-Nazis, etc)
And on the Eastern side of the world, you have a mish-mash of countries okay with homosexuality (Japan, Australia, South Korea) and then the ones that are willing to go as far as kill homosexuals via death penalty. (Parts of the Middle East and Africa)
And then in between that spectrum, you have restriction of expression in Russia, the Civil Code of the Philippines and bits of North and Central Africa with imprisonment as their punishment.
All in all, the East is still pretty divided over the issue while the West is adapting to the changing times.

1. homosexuality is still considered taboo in the Philippines, because of how religion-centric our country is. this leads to people viewing homosexuals and homosexuality itself as a sin. people feel the need to punish of ridicule these homosexuals. whether they think they are making God happy by doing this, i don't know. the song "Sirena" represents a young boy who is openly gay, but struggles with what the rest of society has to say. this leads him to getting beaten and chastised for being himself.
3. - they should be treated with respect
- they should be accepted
- they should be treated like any other person should be treated—with equality
4. i was honestly so happy when i heard that same sex marriage was legalized in all states because i know all of them have waited so long for their love to be legal, because they finally got the happiness they deserved. i hope that the love wins case serves as a message to other countries to do the same, and to let it be an eye opener to everyone else that no love should be called illegal, because love is love and we can't do anything about that.
5. the way they treat homosexuals is disgusting and they should be ashamed of themselves. if God really wanted everyone to love each other, this shouldn't be happening at all. the commandment "love your neighbor as you love yourself" is nowhere to be found here. islams must really loathe themselves to be able to treat homosexuals this way. everyone is our neighbor—that's why God created us all the same.
6. it's quite sad knowing that i live in such a homophobic country. to be a great country, everyone must respect everyone despite their differences and unite. unity and equality cannot be achieved like this. the Philippines' civil code must change because it is disrespectful and disappointing. being this homophobic is preventing so much people from being happy in public. homosexuals always result to hiding themselves in order to stay safe and be happy. if people cannot be happy and love publicly, then there is something horribly wrong with this society (which there is—and it's a lot of things).
7. western countries are more accepting towards homosexuals, unlike asian countries. maybe it is because asian are more religious as compared to westerners, therefore they just follow what is "written" on the bible.
- Samantha Shah 33 J-G
1. Since the Philippines is a Catholic country, homosexuality is viewed as a sin. In the song “Sirena”, it displays how homosexuals are being mistreated and made fun of in our country. In this case, the son was being beaten by his father and mocked by the people. This shows that homosexuality is not fully accepted in all areas of the Philippines since some Filipinos still have a religious and traditional mindset when it comes to homosexuality.
3. Firstly, when you encounter a homosexual, treat them with the love and respect you give to other people. Keep in mind that they are still human beings and they deserve equal treatment. At home, if you find out that you have a homosexual in the family, instead of physically or mentally hurting that person, accept him/her with loving arms. At school, if you have a classmate who is gay or lesbian, do not bully or exclude him/her just because of their sexual preference. Keep an open mind and heart with all kinds of sexual identities. Lastly, on social media, refrain from using words or phrases that could be offensive to homosexuals. Therefore, think twice before posting anything on social media because you may hurt or offend people with your choice of words.
4. In my opinion, I fully support the legalisation of gay marriage in the US. Homosexuals and other sexual identities should be allowed to marry whoever they want because they have the right to love and spend the rest of their lives with their significant other. The church does not accept the sexual act between 2 boys or 2 girls, however, they should accept the bond of marriage between these homosexuals because they deserve to have the right to marry their loved one.
- 1. According to the song sirena, homosexuals are not accepted by the community. They are not mistreated and are laughed upon. Regardless of the harsh behavior against them they will still stand proud and be who they really are.
3. It is evident in out country that homosexuals are merely tolerated and not accepted. First, I think that we should be able to completely accept homosexuality with open arms and without any judgement. Next, we should respect them because we are all human regardless of gender, this means that everyone deserves our respect. Lastly, we should give them their rights, especially since the homosexuals are not well represented in the government.
4. I'am delighted by the news that US Supreme Court was open minded enough to legally allow same-sex marriage in all 50 states but our country is not ready for that yet. I believe that same-sex marriage should not be allowed in the Church but should only be civil unions.
5. It is heartbreaking to hear how homosexuals are being treated by the Islams. They should not be treated badly because of their genders. It is wrong to be killed, to be put in asylums or to be treated poorly for accepting who you are. We are all equal in God's eyes and He gave us freedom to choose but He wouldn't want us to hurt one another.
6. That is such a homophobic statement. Since when was it okay to call homosexuality a disease? Being heterosexual does not give you the right to think highly above anybody else nor is it okay for you to discriminate anyone. It is no wonder why we cannot accept homosexuality since our own government has no plans on fixing the issue.
7. Western culture is definitely more open about homosexuality. As opposed to the Asian culture, which has not really discussed the issue. Especially here in our own country, there has been no change in the treatment towards the LGBT community.
- 1. In the music video of the song, Sirena, the homosexual man was viewed as someone of an anomalous nature. The man was not accepted for who he is because he was different from others. Due to the way he acted and looked, he was beaten and mocked. Homosexuals are still considered taboo in our country due to our strong religious beliefs and values. Our country is still not so accepting of these people because we believe that the Church is against them.
3. A homosexual isn’t necessarily someone who dresses and acts like the opposite sex, it could just be someone who just has sexual feelings toward the same sex. Therefore, we must treat them just like how we treat any other person. They are no different from us. We should respect them and accept them with open arms because they are no more or no less of a person than we are. We should also avoid using gay slurs towards not only those of the LGBT community, but to everyone in general for they can be offensive and hurtful.
4. I am aware of the Love Wins case and I fully support the decision of the US Supreme Court to legalise gay marriage. Those of the LGBT community should be allowed to marry whoever they want because love is love, and it knows no boundaries. The church can condemn the act of sodomy and sexual acts between homosexuals but they cannot condemn love, be it of the same or opposite gender.
5. I think this is just unacceptable, inhumane, and disgusting. It heartbreaks me to know that Islams of the LGBT community are being killed and put away just for being who they are. You do not have the right to punish these people just because they are different in your eyes. We are all equal despite having different race, religion, gender, and sexual orientation.
6. This is nothing but a homophobic and close-minded statement. Homosexuality is not a disease or sickness. It is so disgusting to hear something like that coming from my own country. It sad to know that I live in such an unaccepting and homophobic country with such narrow minded views on the LGBT community. The Philippines is supposed to be a country of hospitality and love.
7. Western countries are definitely more accepting and open towards homosexuality. Whereas, eastern countries treat it as if it was a mental illness or a defiance towards religion. I think western countries are more exposed to the LGBT community since it is shown through various media and entertainment such as television and film. However, in the eastern countries, these kinds of entertainment are banned. An example would be the 2015 movie, Carol. It was widely regarded as one of the best films of the year and decade. Thus, earning six Oscar nominations such as best actress and best supporting actress. However, the film was banned in middle eastern countries and has not yet been distributed in the Philippines due to its portrayal of lesbian women.

1. In the MTV of Sirena, homosexuals are very harshly mistreated, seen as sinners. They are treated with much disgrace and are abused beyond their rights.
2.
3. Homosexuals should be treated like heterosexuals, with respect. We should not make fun of homosexuals, no verbal or physical abuse. We shouldn't exclude homosexuals for their preferences, they deserve to get along with heterosexuals. We shouldn't label them as different, we should accet them for who they are, because at the end of the day, we're all children of God, no matter our preferences.
4. Personally, I'm happy about the Love Wins case. It's about time we start respecting homosexuals and allow them to live normal lives, loving and marrying whoever they want. This isn't blasphemy, in fact, it follows the very word of God to love thy neighbor, to treat him as you'd treat yourself. So if heterosexuals can marry, so should homosexuals, it's equality.
5. I find it quite unfair that homosexuals are being treated so poorly just because of their preference. Heterosexuality does not make a man superior, nor does it give him the right to mistreat a homosexual. In fact, people don't have the right to mistreat anyone, let alone homosexuals.
6. Honestly, I find it wrong. It's so nonsense to call it a sickness/disease. They are not beneath us, they don't deserve to be called sicknesses. They're not doing anything wrong, they're not doing anything to hurt heterosexuals, so there is no reason to call them such. It's very much uncalled for, such foul and unfair play by the Philippines.
7. Western countries are generally more accepting of homosexuals, while Asian countries usually beg to differ. The cause of this is that most Asian countries are very religious with their religions finding homosexuality as "Wrong."
- 1. in view of the MTV "Sirena" how is a homosexual presented by the interpreter who sung the song in the first person.
- A homosexual is presented as a mermaid with hidden beauty, refusing to be accepted by those around them. They are beaten up and abused, being thought different and unnatural.
2. What key statements or phrases in the lyrics would attest how discriminating our culture is towards homosexuals. Write at least 5.
3. How then should homosexuals be properly treated. Give at least three concrete examples.
- Homosexuals should be treated like actual people. They should be respected, not held prejudice against, and be treated with sincerity.
4. Love wins case in the US Supreme Court. Give your opinion.
- It's amazing because it's one step closer to full acceptance of people in the LGBTQIA+ spectrum. They get to love and live in love. I'm super happy it happened!
5. Give your opinion on the article "Islamic Treatment of Homosexuals".
- It's unjust because homosexuals aren't doing anything wrong by loving someone of the same sex. They're not hurting anyone or disobeying anyone. Love is love, and people have to respect that.
6. Homosexuality is a disease or a sickness according to the amended Civil Code of the Philippines. Give your reaction.
- I'm outraged by it because homosexuality is something innate. It's natural and not acquired by germs or whatever. There's nothing wrong with it because it's not hurting anybody.
7. Compare and contrast: Western countries and Asian countries as to treatment of homosexuality.
- Western countries are more accepting with homosexuals than Asian countries, because Asian countries tend to be more conservative. However, both sets of countries tend to dwell on negative concepts of homosexuality, as it has not yet been fully accepted.
- Hazel Toque CN: 38 JG
1. in view of the MTV "Sirena" how is a homosexual presented by the interpreter who sung the song in the first person.
Gloc 9’s “Sirena” depicted how homosexuals are openly criticized in the Philippines. Due to the country’s conservative and religious views, homosexuality has been considered as a sin by most Filipino families. Today, a lot are still struggling to come out because they’re constantly made fun of by the people around them.
2. What key statements or phrases in the lyrics would attest how discriminating our culture is towards homosexuals. Write at least 5.
3. How then should homosexuals be properly treated. Give at least three concrete examples.
Homosexuals should be treated equally as others – they have the right to live normally along with others, without having to endure criticism in each passing day. They are our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ and should therefore be treated and viewed with respect. We must accept them, regardless of their sexual preference. It is their personal choice and NOTHING is absolutely wrong with that, as long as they do not step down on others. On social media, we should also be sensitive with whatever we post, especially the words that we use as it may affect and appear as degrading to specific people.
- 4. Love wins case in the US Supreme Court. Give your opinion.
Upon hearing this news, I was overjoyed, for love finally conquered all. Despite criticisms around the globe, the U.S government has made a decision that changed (will change) the lives of the people who belong in the LGBT community. It was definitely a milestone and the first step into 'global acceptance’.
5. Give your opinion on the article "Islamic Treatment of Homosexuals”.
Today, the Islamic treatment of homosexuals may be considered blasphemous than homosexuality itself, as they say, for it violates the Bible’s teachings of loving one another. Homosexuals live a life in love just as heterosexuals do and it’s unfortunate how love in another form is being condemned by those who inhibit themselves from having an open mind. Homosexuality is not a sin; mistreating your neighbours is.
6. Homosexuality is a disease or a sickness according to the amended Civil Code of the Philippines. Give your reaction.
How is self-acceptance a sin? Homosexuality isn’t something that could be cured – it is not a disease, it is something that an individual recognizes over time. It comes from the inner-self which reflects what or who we truly are. I don’t understand how any of these things violate a certain law.
7. Compare and contrast: Western countries and Asian countries as to treatment of homosexuality.
Western countries have been more open towards homosexuality and the LGBT community, whereas Asian countries are still somehow conservative. Cultural differences and the way its people are exposed to these things definitely play a huge factor in our views regarding this topic.
