“Our Duty as His Servants”
By: Janella Varias, Junior I
Frederick E. Owen Jr. once said “We were not put on this
Earth to be ordinary.” However, what must we do in order for us to stop being
“ordinary?” In my opinion, I believe that we must be just like God. Although
God is perfect and we are not, we can be like Him in so many ways. I
encountered a pregnant beggar on the road, who was selling small rags, a couple
of days ago. I pointed the woman to my mother, who I remember told me that she
badly needed new cleaning equipment for the house. We wanted to help the
pregnant woman so we bought all of her rags. She thanked us and before leaving,
I saw teardrops running down her face.
As stated in the gospel, Jesus reminds us to bring glad
tidings to the poor. Our duty as God’s servant is to help meet the basic needs
of the marginalized. Last year, 2015, was “The Year of the Poor.” Instead of
buying lavish and luxurious things for ourselves, we could have helped the poor
by buying them food to eat, showing compassion by donating old clothes, etc.
However, being poor doesn’t necessarily mean that you lack shelter, food and
clothing. It can also mean being poor in happiness, companionship, and love. In
order to feel God’s presence in our lives, people will come to teach us a
lesson. I believe the woman who was selling rags, was a reminder for my mom and
I that we must open our hearts and always lend a helping hand to the needy. We
hope that we made the woman happy and was able to see Christ in her life
despite all the troubles and hardships she is facing.
We are all called by God to spread His word. Our mission is
for people to see Christ in our small little acts of love. This challenge was
given to us so that we will be able to strengthen our relationship with Him. By
sacrificing time to help others, we wouldn’t know it, but God will surely
reward us soon because He is happy that we are doing things that are pleasing
to His eyes. As Lasallian students, we can incorporate the 10 C’s in our lives,
and in doubt, our lives will instantly become better because these values help
us to become more like God.
