5TH SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION TERM 3 JUNIOR-G

5th Sunday of Lent March 13 Sunday Gospel JN 8:1-11

Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
But early in the morning he arrived again in the temple area,
and all the people started coming to him,
and he sat down and taught them.
Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman
who had been caught in adultery
and made her stand in the middle.
They said to him,
“Teacher, this woman was caught
in the very act of committing adultery.
Now in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such women.
So what do you say?”
They said this to test him,
so that they could have some charge to bring against him.
Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with his finger.
But when they continued asking him,
he straightened up and said to them,
“Let the one among you who is without sin
be the first to throw a stone at her.”
Again he bent down and wrote on the ground.
And in response, they went away one by one,
beginning with the elders.
So he was left alone with the woman before him.
Then Jesus straightened up and said to her,
“Woman, where are they?
Has no one condemned you?”
She replied, “No one, sir.”
Then Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you.
Go, and from now on do not sin any more.”

    1. Simply put, hypocrisy is definitely present in this gospel, and also applies to so many people on a day-to-day basis in our lives. (Regardless of age.)
But to be slightly more particular about it, throwing someone "under the bus" (or alternatively, making someone take the blame when you are also guilty) is pretty common place amongst younger people, as it allows them to get off scot free from something while also letting someone else take the fall.

    2. A CL concept you can apply to this gospel, would be the idea of ontological dignity of a human being.
The reason being, that despite the woman in the gospel having committed the sin of adultery, she isn't entirely unforgiveable for her sin. (As Jesus shows near the end.)
Another concept that is applicable, would be Christian Anthropology, which mentions that man has fallen but can also be redeemed of his sins.

    3. Going back the whole hypocrisy thing from earlier, a lot of people nowadays happily condemn others if they have been caught in the act doing something immoral or so and so. (Ex. Caught watching pornography.)
Yet at the same time, the condemners themselves are just as guilty as the person they're so happy to feed to the wolves.
Basically, people these days love to condemn others, despite they themselves are just as guilty as the rest of partaking in something like watching pornography or so and so.

1.Lust and hormonal urges are issues adolescents face nowadays. Hormones in teens aren’t fully developed. Therefore, they are more likely impulsive, and they don’t think much before they do. Also, with social media and pop culture, we have forgotten the true meaning of chastity. We think its okay to say this and that. We forget that people have feelings because we think that our rants on social media are okay. It isn’t.

    2. In my opinion, the concept of true freedom would be a good topic to relate to the gospel. Freedom is being given the privilege to do whatever you want, but true freedom is being given the freedom to live by your conscience to do the right thing. Also the ontological dignity of a human being would be applicable. It states that no matter what you do, you cannot lose your dignity. Sin can’t destroy that.

3.There are a lot of obstacles that deal with human sexuality, and I think a lot of people my age are guilty. All have sinned. Although, we don’t show it. In the gospel a woman has committed adultery and she was shamed. She sinned, yet Jesus forgave her. In relation to us in the present time, a lot of us sin through making ourselves unchaste. Yet God will forgive us because we are His children.

    1. As shown in the gospel, Lust (adultery) is a problem in the society today. People can get addicted to sex, and sometimes they value sex over their own relationship with others.

    2. Chastity can be applied here in the case of the woman because she knowingly committed adultery. Christian Anthropology can also be applied due to "Man is Fallen but Redeemed", where one can still be forgiven.

    3. A lot of people my age are guilty of abusing our human sexuality. Those who condemn others for doing so are hypocrites because they too have done it in the past. Despite our earthly conflicts, God will still forgive us in the end, for we are His children.

The societal problem: pre-marital sex has been talked about by many. And for me, this gospel has had some similarities in a way where the people who commit pre-marital sex are coming from younger generations nowadays which is bad. This is bad because as early as their age, they are straying away from God's love and the real and pure definition of sex. The real definition of sex is for MARRIED couples to be able to bear fruit and increase in number so that extinction of man-kind will be prevented. Moreover, this can be related to the topic about love and commitment of a married couple because of love and commitment, there is a bond and their fruit is blessed by God. While pre-marital sex is not accepted by the Church because it is immoral to do so. Lastly, as I said it can be related to human sexuality because pre-marital sex can be a hindrance towards God's kingdom, homosexual acts are not supposed to be done because it prevents pro-creation.

    This Gospel Talks about Mercy.

Mercy when we receive it helps us show mercy ourselves. When we are hard on others, it’s sometimes because we are hard on ourselves and cannot really believe we are loved. The light of God’s mercy is bright enough that you can no longer see the stars that are our sins and faults and failings. Maybe Jesus means something like this when he says that he is the light of the world.

Secondly, we can always apply the three different dimensions of faith, especially morals. We know that adultery is bad, so why strive for it? Its simple to just abstain and stay true to your "I do".

Most people treat sex as something God wouldn't punish one about. But of course, He will. You never know, he may stop you from engaging ins sexual acts in the future, or he'll make you fertile, not being able to create children anymore. We need to understand that whatever we do reflects how God will see us.

As it can be seen in the gospel, hypocrisy is a huge issue. We tend to judge others before we judge ourselves. In order to fix that, we must know who we are first before trying to go against others for what they have done. It helps to be careful of what we say and do. Moreover, key concepts in the revalida that can be related to this are the ontological and moral dignities of a person. The woman in the gospel (and the man she cheated with) may have lost their moral dignity, but their ontological dignity still stands because they are human. No matter what they do, no matter how bad they get, they still have value due to the fact that they are human beings. Addressing the obstacles of human sexuality, this gospel shows that being abusive and full of disregard when it comes to our sexuality can be sinful. We must totally take care of our sexuality as it is a gift given to us by God.

    1] ONLY GOD CAN CONDEMN
We have no right to condemn others, because we are all imperfect in our own ways. It is only through God the Father who sees are faults for us to be judged. We have no right to condemn others for we are imperfect and we are with sin.

    2] WE ARE HUMAN TOO
Our Ontological Dignity can never be stained, no matter how much we have sinned. However, our moral can. But even if we are the woman in the Gospel, we still deserve forgiveness due to that Dignity.

    3] WE AFFIRM
We do not bring down others, we affirm them. Just like the societal issue of catcalling, instead of degrading people based on their appearance, objectifying them, we should instead affirm them because we are all God's children.

Lust or adultery is a huge contemporary issue that is explained in the Gospel and is something that anyone can commit-and it is against one of the commandments. This relates to the topics in the revalida concerning pre-marital sex. In my opinion and according to the Church, sexual intercourse should be done between a man and woman who are married and truly in love with each other. God may have told us to procreate, but things like pre-marital sex, and usage of contraceptives can hinder us from doing God’s message.

  10. Elizabeth Jaehn JG

Hypocrisy is prevalent in this issue because before anything else, we tend to judge others. This must be resolved by simply knowing and realizing that we are not perfect and so are those around us. We must be aware of the things we say and the things we do because one small mistake can lead to even bigger problems.

There are various concepts that can be applied to this issue; namely ontological dignity, moral dignity, and the three dimensions of faith. Both the woman and the man may have lost their moral dignity through sinning however, their ontological dignity still remains. Their moral dignity could still be regained by confessing and doing good acts.

The gospel explains that we must take care of our sexuality for it was given to us to that we may appreciate and cherish it once we meet the person we know we will spend the rest of our lives with. The gift of sexuality and the act must not be taken advantage of for it is a gift given to us by God.

In the gospel today, God has revealed an essential fact in our lives — everyone commits a sin. We do not have the right to condemn someone for committing one for we have done the same thing once in our lives. As Christians living by the Gospel, we should know how to look within ourselves first. Check how we are as an individual before criticizing others.
Hypocrisy is inevitable; however, we must do our best in order to put it aside.

In this gospel, it is mainly about us Catholics and committing sins. In the present, as young individuals, we tend to get caught up in peer pressure. Thus, we end up turning away from God and committing sins. This gospel teaches us to live by the commandments and follow the footsteps of Jesus.

I can relate this gospel with the concept of freedom and conscience as well. God has given us so much freedom and power to make our own decisions. It is a challenge for each and every one of us to have a good moral ground and to continuously follow this faculty in every situation we are in.

Our moral faculty is something we must depend on when we are faced with a hard decision. These God-given gifts are here to guide us and overcome the obstacles coming our way. Such as the obstacles of Human Sexuality that we face as young individuals today. There are many temptations that are in front of us, and it is up to us whether to use our freedom and conscience or not. Thus, we must ask ourselves, what would Jesus do?

    ReplyDelete
  13. The youth these days are very vocal on their opinions of anything but with respect to whatever the situation is. What makes being a youth a challenge is that all your actions reflection of who you are immediately, and people might not give you a chance to show who you really are. Teenagers may judge people and that is seen in the today’s gospel. But the Lord is the only one who can truly judge a person. We should can not condemn our neighbours for we all do sin, only Jesus Christ can, and he will forgive you for he forgives everyone, and when you ask for forgiveness, you must forgive yourself and then repent.

A topic that is discussed in the gospel can be freedom. The gospel talks about committing sin and there is a reason why we do them. God has given us the freedom to do what we want, that’s how much he trusts in us. Once you’ve abused your freedom, you’ve done sin. God gave us freedom because He loves us, but we don’t give back as much as to what he’s given to us. When we sin it effects not only our freedom but our conscience, law, and love.

There are sins that are included when it comes to our human sexuality. Human Sexuality is a gift from God and we need to do as God says; to go and procreate in order to survive. We need to start doing what is right for ourselves and the human race. As long as we avoid doing sin, we can truly live in Jesus Christ.

This gospel can address the human sexuality since it helps us know what we could get our self into before we do something. Nowadays, there are more and more people that commit the sin of lust. People tend to get addicted to doing the act of sex that they start doing it with lots of different people. We can apply the topic of conscience since it helps us know if what we are doing is correct or wrong. Without our conscience we will have a hard time knowing if what we did or what we are going to do is correct or wrong. Our conscience can also help us stop ourselves from doing acts which could lead to us committing a sin

An issue that the gospel faces is that we do not repent our sins and compare our sins with others, thinking that we are better than them
One issue that the gospel faces in society is that we are too quick to pass on judgement against others, especially their sins.

A topic I can relate this gospel to is conscience. We all have a conscience which helps us determine if an act we will commit is right or wrong and we this gospel we how each and everyone used their conscience and figured out that stoning the woman was wrong.

We can relate human sexuality to this gospel since the woman was accused of adultery. Adultery is an obstacle to our human sexuality. We must avoid acts like this in our to protect our sexuality.

    1. In today's society, Lust can be seen all around the world. Prostitution, Pre-Marital Sex and etc. This can also be seen in the gospel therefore we must learn how to not commit these sins.
    2. Chastity can be applied in this gospel because the woman committed adultery. She chose to stop being chaste and chose to do bad. But this does not mean she cannot be forgiven. If she is sorry for her sins, then she can be forgiven. Christian Anthropology is seen here because it states that man has fallen but can be forgiven.
    3. A lot of people try to judge others but we must not do that because we are equally guilty. We should learn how to be humble and stop being selfish and learn how to connect. The obstacles in Human Sexuality can be related today because many people commit these sins. We should learn how to be aware of our surroundings and try to feel what others feel.

    1. As young adults, we face obstacles that tempt us to give into our carnal desires, therefore compromising our chastity. These desires include giving into premarital sex or committing adultery. Another challenge that we face is hypocrisy. It is unfortunate that people condemn those who commit sin even if they themselves sin every day. Sin is inevitable, therefore we cannot judge those who have sinned because we have done the same.

    2. Concepts from the revalida topics I can apply here is the gift of freedom and conscience. Freedom is the gift of God, and although we are given the right to do anything without hindrance, it is up to our own conscience to decide whether we do what is right or wrong.

    3. This gospel speaks out to those who have indulged themselves in the obstacles to chastity. Although they have sinned, God will forgive every sin that they have done as long as they recognize their faults and never do it again.

The Gospel challenges us to stop condemning others for their sins and to stop discriminating them, the gravity of a sin may matter but condemning others for it is unnecessary as it only makes them look bad. As seen in the Gospel nobody stoned the woman as everyone in that crowd has sinned. It is given that nobody is perfect and just because someone has done a bad sin does not give us the right to call them our for it. We are in no place to shame others for their wrong doings, doing that should only mean that we should get shamed in return. Although just because nobody can and or should condemn us does not mean we should not turn away from these evils as they are what causes possible condemnation and discrimination in the first place. In relation to this I believe that many revalida topics can be applied but I believe the dignity of man is best here mainly because regardless of what we do to ourselves and others, we are still human. The gravity of sin and what we have done in our lives is irrelevant in this case as our dignity will make and forever keep us human because it is what God has done and nobody has the right to take away what God has given to us. This gospel is perfect in addressing the obstacles as first of all the issue here is adultery. In applying to the general outlook towards obstacles of human sexuality, because of wrong and sinful sexual acts people get condemned and shamed. This should be stopped as it does not help solve the issue of the obstacles but rather adds a new problem as people then begin to discriminate those who fall under this such as the prostitutes who struggle in making a living and the homosexuals who condemned of their identity. In short, condemnation and discrimination is basic hypocrisy as people call out others for their sins when in fact these people also do sin.

As shown in the gospel above, Lust is a huge problem in the society today. In my opinion, the concept of true freedom would be a good topic to relate to the gospel. Freedom is when you are free do whatever you want and make your own choices. There are simply a lot of obstacles that deal with human sexuality. We all have sinned. In the gospel, the woman committed adultery yet Jesus forgave her. In summary, we must treasure our virginity, we must not lose it to just anybody. We must keep ourselves pure until we meet the person whom we know we will spend our entire lives with.

The gospel shows how lust, specifically pre-marital sex, is an issue in today’s society. This is very common amongst teenagers because it is constantly depicted in various forms of media and entertainment. Film, music, and TV glamorize these kinds of sexual themes, which encourages teenagers to engage in lustful acts.

Chastity can be applied here because we all have to remember to stay pure and remain steadfast with the Lord. We must keep in mind that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, we have to resist temptation and abstain from engaging in vices.

This gospel gives light to the many obstacles of human sexuality such as lust through the hypocrisy of others. The gospel shows how the lustful condemn others for doing the same things they do. We are all guilty, and the only way make things better is to show stray away from our vices and remain chaste. God will then forgive us.

    1. I think that the the challenges of this gospel in today’s society is lust. This is very common nowadays because media with sexual things are very much accessible to many teenagers thus tempting them to do lustful things

    2. Conscience can be best applied here because the woman had the choice to do the right or wrong but she chose to do the wrong thing and committed adultery, if she just followed her conscience then she could have stayed faithful to her love one.

    3. We tend to judge others without looking at ourselves and reflecting on the bad things us also. We don’t have the right to judge others because are sinners and we aren’t perfect.

    1. This Gospel has a very applicable problem in which is seen in our society. People judge other people who commit acts of wrongdoings and yet they, themselves, commit the same act of wrongdoings. People of the society become judgemental that they get mad at people even if they do it also.

    2. The concept in which can applied here is of Sin. Here it talks about how everyone commits sin and that we shouldn't judge others who do it. When we commit sin, we disobey what God has taught us to be; we fail to be moral, which then hurts God.

    3. This address the obstacles of Human Sexuality because our failure to be moral and un-sinful leads us to breaking our Human Sexuality. As we do not follow the teachings of Human Sexuality, we eventually commit these obstacles as a sin.

    1. The youth of today are facing the challenge of hypocrisy. We condemn people for the wrong things they have done but fail to realize that they themselves have done wrong things. Sometimes their own sins are even greater. We should learn to accept others and learn that no human being is perfect.

    2. A key concept from the Revalida that can be applied here is the dignity of a human being. Even through sin, a person's ontological dignity is always there, and we should respect that. One's moral dignity, though, can be lost, but it can be found again through faith and change.

    3. The gospel talks about adultery. It is a very heinous act and should be avoided at all costs. It is a challenge to human sexuality because one's sexuality should only be expressed for one individual alone and at the right time.

    ReplyDelete
  26. ALIAH RAFAEL, JG

The issue in this gospel faces the situation where in we do not repent our sins and where in we compare our sins with others. The youth today deals with a lot of judgement which could lead to very bad problems in the near future. No one is perfect and we should learn to realize our own faults and correct them.

The best key concept that relates to this gospel is the conscience of oneself which can help determine whether the act we do is right or wrong.

Everyday there are teenagers that do things that are not right and with this gospel it shows how it can be challenging for someone to be sin free but even if we sin Jesus will always forgive us since he is a forgiving God.

    1. The challenge that we face here in this society that everyone is judged or condemned for their sins, even though we are all sinners and maybe even guilty of committing the same sin. Most of us are hypocrites.

    2. A revalida concept is the ontological dignity. In the gospel, the woman is forgiven, probably due to her ontological dignity. This is the dignity that cannot be lost no matter what we do, allowing Jesus to forgive her.

    3. With human sexuality in mind, the gospel teaches us to forgive. This tackles the obstacle that is human sexuality by accepting others, by forgiving other who mistreat this gift. We must not condemn those who choose a different path for their sexuality, for we too are different and sinners in our own way.

    1. Whatever mistakes or flaws, however grave they are, only God may decide for their fate—if it is time for their mortal lives to end. In the parable, Jesus said that only those who were without sin may condemn the woman; this is also an eye-opening situation because in this world, there is hardly anyone without sin. No one is truly clean or free of sin; which is a problem that we continually face. How do we become true servants of the Lord with stained hearts?

    2. A concept could be the ontological dignity because this can never be stained— it is forever clean and our dignity remains that way in the face of the Lord. No matter how much we have sinned.

    3. Only God make decisions that decide our lives: if we live or not. We make our own choices, but everything else relies on God. In terms of human sexuality, God’s plans for us regarding this matter should not be just solely decided by us. We must be thoroughly guided by the Holy Spirit to make good decisions that are morally right. This is what we, as Christians, should live for.
